Don’t want to spend upwards of $6 for one Whisper Phone?
Here is a quick and simple way to make your own before school begins!
Before you start crafting let’s talk about what a whisper phone can be used for. I made a class set of these my first year of teaching. They have been so useful I wanted to share how to make them with you! A whisper phone or what I call a phonics phone allows a child to talk into the phone and hear their own voice. I use these for phonics, writing, reading, or anything where I need the student to hear their voice. It aids in proper pronunciation of words and sounds. It can also be used to help build fluency.
Here are some examples:
When learning a new digraph, kiddos whisper read words using this phone for practice.
For writing, kiddos whisper read their writing using this phone. Thinking…Does it make sense? Does it sound right? It helps them with editing.
For reading, kiddos whisper read into the phone. We talk about being a fluent reader. What does that mean? What should I sound like?
Did you find the common word in each of those examples? WHISPER! The kiddos love hearing themselves, so it is important to set up procedures when using them.

The kiddos love hearing themselves and will often want to explore ways to make sounds come out for all to hear! So, it is important to set up procedures when using them.
